My co-founder, Bode, and I used to work in the same financial institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We were both passionate about helping people, despite being in different units within the same department. Interestingly, we lived in the same area and developed a strong bond, akin to brothers. Before Dataleum, there was already a foundation of friendship and brotherhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our journey began with a shared passion for upskilling. Bode, the CEO of Dataleum, stands out for his ability to motivate and involve others. He wanted to attend a specific training and invited me to join him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One Monday morning, around 9 am, while having breakfast with pap and akara, we conceived the idea. During our contemplation, Bode reached out to about 10 people, proposing a 10,000 naira fee for a data analysis training, and they were willing to pay. This small research within our unit served as a strong validation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Recognizing the need for a team, we sought three essential qualities within our circle: competency, loyalty, and trust. Understanding the challenges that often accompany startup ventures, we prioritized strength and resilience. Five years later, we continue to grow steadily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DAVID: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE EDTECH OVER FINTECH?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n TITILOLA BELLO<\/strong>: Personally, it aligns with my values of upskilling, helping, and empowering people. Bringing smiles to their faces, when they wear our shirt , when they proudly display their certificates, it brings me so much joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, if you search online during your free time for “exceptional Nigerian man<\/em><\/strong>,” that would be my father. He held 2 PhDs, 4 Masters, and 3 BSc degrees, so you could say it runs in the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DAVID: WHAT’S THE GREATEST CHALLENGE YOU’VE FACED IN THIS JOURNEY?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n TITILOLA BELLO<\/strong>: There have been numerous challenges; it hasn’t been a smooth journey. Initially, when we began, we conducted physical classes. However, when the pandemic hit, we had to adapt and overcome the challenge by organizing a virtual hackathon. This success led us to transition into virtual classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Staff retention is another hurdle due to the brain drain associated with the “japa wave.” Fortunately, we’ve managed effective manpower management, fostering a belief in and pride for the brand. Achieving this required considerable effort in culture solidification, process alignment, and intrinsic motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, the country’s economic condition impacts us all. Despite the soaring prices of goods, we’re dedicated to delivering quality and affordable courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DAVID: OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS, YOUR BRAND HAS RECEIVED NUMEROUS AWARDS. WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THE SUCCESS OF THE BRAND TO?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Titiola Bello: It’s simply three words \u2013 “Give value first<\/em><\/strong>.” This principle has propelled us to great heights, emphasizing giving value to our students and stakeholders alike. It’s not about financial gains; it’s about putting our commitment into it, asking, “How can I help you?” This approach has opened doors and elevated our reputation even in places we’re not physically present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Consider two companies, Company A and Company B. Company A leaves you to determine your fate after training, while Company B goes the extra mile \u2013 helping with CVs, community engagement, job connections, and offering free refresher classes. When alumni vote for an award, which company do you think they would choose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n We’ve evolved our business model from B2B to B2C, often through referrals, showcasing the value we bring to our clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DAVID: HOW DID YOU TRANSITION YOUR BUSINESS MODEL FROM B2C TO B2B?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n TITIOLA BELLO<\/strong>: We were prepared, working towards it, allocating resources because we saw a market. Now, we operate in B2C, B2B, and B2G. We’ve become trusted training partners for government parastatals, thanks to our alumni and network referrals. Access Bank was a pivotal breakthrough \u2013 being former students and staff, our initial focus was on giving value.
