Henotacemedia conducted an exclusive interview with Tolulope Abiodun, also known as Abbey Tee, also known as retired dancer on Instagram, winner of the Tech Personality of the Year award, an Instagram influencer, and, most importantly, a dedicated believer. Enjoy this classic conversation.
HENOTACE: CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING NAMED “TECH PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR.” WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN TECH?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: I used to work in a bank, and as the finance industry in Nigeria began to transition towards fintech, I started researching the fintech industry globally and in Nigeria. I realized that if I were to leave the bank, this is where I wanted to be. I began working towards that goal, even though I received other job offers from banks, some with higher pay. I turned them down because I was done with traditional banks.
HENOTACE: DO YOU CONSIDER ENTERTAINMENT AS A CAREER ALONGSIDE TECH?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: I consider entertainment something I’m associated with. I didn’t actively pursue entertainment. With my Instagram page, I shared what I enjoyed doing. I never aimed to make myself popular. I focus more on tech, and for entertainment, I make myself available when needed outside of social media.
HENOTACE: HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR ROLES AS AN INFLUENCER AND TECH PERSONALITY?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: For content creation, I set aside time, usually on weekends, to shoot content and write it down. I create drafts to minimize the pressure. My tech work is a daily commitment, but for entertainment, I plan ahead to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
HENOTACE: AS A MULTITALENTED INDIVIDUAL, HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT TO FOCUS ON?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: I often advise multitalented individuals to be prayerful and cautious not to get distracted. While you may have various gifts, some things require your primary focus. I’ve identified what will have a finite impact and what will continue with me for the long term. Whatever you’re doing, do it excellently. I, for instance, rarely dance except for posting on my page or if invited for someone’s dance video. Prioritization is essential; paid work takes precedence over hobbies. For example, I only do MC work on weekends because my primary commitment is to my job.
HENOTACE: CAN YOU SHARE THE TECH TRENDS YOU ANTICIPATE IN THE COMING YEARS?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: Recently, we’ve seen ChatGPT revolutionize the tech space. In the next five years, I expect significant developments in artificial intelligence (AI). Instead of fearing that AI will take jobs, it’s wise to understand how AI works and use it to your advantage.
HENOTACE: WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING SITUATION YOU’VE ENCOUNTERED IN TECH?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: As a sales and business developer, a major challenge is convincing clients with existing infrastructure to use our services. Building trust and maintaining relationships is crucial. I’ve had ongoing conversations with a client for over a year, but persistence pays off. Don’t give up on a client.
HENOTACE: HOW DO YOU REACH OUT TO THESE CLIENTS?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: In the tech space, LinkedIn is essential. Research the company and reach out to the right contact, even if it’s not the CEO. Sometimes, CEOs are too busy. I keep an eye on LinkedIn for new companies I’m not familiar with. Additionally, lead generation software like Apollo can help you discover new clients.
HENOTACE: THE TECH INDUSTRY IS VAST AND DYNAMIC. HOW DO YOU STAY UPDATED WITH THE LATEST TRENDS?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: Signing up for tech newsletters, such as TechCabal and TechCrunch, is a great way to stay informed about the latest developments in the tech space. Being active on the internet and staying updated on tech events is also crucial.
HENOTACE: WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED IN THE ENTERTAINMENT SECTOR?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: I have plans to release an EP, likely next year. I also intend to make myself available for Afro-gospel artist music videos, using my dance talent to promote the gospel. Currently, I don’t charge for using my talent to promote the gospel. For skits, I have different series in mind that will bring joy and laughter to people.
HENOTACE: ARE YOU CONSIDERING PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER SKIT MAKERS?
TOLULOPE ABIODUN: I’m open to partnerships. For example, I have a friend, Babs (Zualakate). If there’s an opportunity to collaborate, I’m willing, but I’m not actively seeking partnerships.
